Gigi Modaffari, born 1999 in Southern California, is an American visual artist currently residing in Northern Kentucky where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting at Northern Kentucky University. A semester of landscape painting at Orange County School of the Arts cemented her love of oil painting as a medium, and served as the catalyst for her passion toward rendering the observable world through both direct and indirect methods. This ongoing interest in interpreting the matter of individual objects, landscapes, interiors, as well as the space within and around them through the medium of oil paint has only strengthened with her continued art education at NKU.
About the Artist
“My art is about the experience of seeing through my eyes. Whether through direct observation alone, purely imaginative speculations, or a combination of both, I create artworks that invite the viewer to see through my point of view. I am drawn to the medium of oil paint because of the challenge of arranging brushstrokes on a canvas in order to convey an emotion, or to move objects through space. I consider the relationships between shapes in a composition and how they can be used to take the viewer on a journey throughout the piece. Color and value are fundamental elements in my paintings, used to enable the viewer to physically or emotionally feel the presence of atmosphere in my works. That a painting can elicit such a response at all, from a collection of carefully placed material on a flat plane, is why this medium is so powerful to me.”
